6 Steps to your Winter Glow

Tea is flowing, there’s a nip in the air and getting up in the morning is getting more and more difficult…that’s right! Winter is on its way. I know as the seasons change we find ourselves in a bit of a SOS situation. You know? Save Our Skin? I’m here to help you navigate the challenges that come with going from a climate that’s mostly warm to a season of brrrr!

To avoid Jack Frost nibbling on your nose, here are some winter tips to keep your skin glowing while the sun isn’t: 

  1. Hydration Station:

When the weather gets chilly, you’re less inclined to drink something cold. While the hot teas and cocoas will keep you warm, the best-kept skin secret is still water. As temperatures drop and everything becomes less humid, our moisture is stripped from our skin. So grab a reusable water bottle, add a slice of lemon and drink water throughout the day-trust me, your skin will thank you! Psst and if you want a heat cheat: hot water and lemon is a winter dream! 

  1. Not too late to exfoliate:

When your skin gets that tight, itchy feeling it usually means that it’s dry. Before you moisturise, don’t forget to exfoliate all those dead skin cells that’ll only make your makeup look flakey and will stop the moisturisation process if you ignore them. Remember though; only exfoliate your skin every 3-7 days depending on your skin type. Over-exfoliation could remove that new layer of skin coming in!

  1. Be wise-moisturise:

This is the most important step: moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! Moisturising rehydrates your skin and stops peeling, flaking, itchiness and restores a general magical glow that you’ll want to have all winter long. The best time to apply your cream is right after a warm shower and exfoliation. You’ll need a thicker face cream during winter and don’t pass up on an overnight moisturise for your elbows, hands and feet (Psst an overnight moisturise is when you leave a thicker layer of cream on your body to soak in throughout the night.)

  1. The blocker…the sun blocker

Even though the sky outside is gray and frosty it doesn’t mean you’re free from sun damage (seriously unfair if you ask me!) If anything, winter is a season where you’re more likely to get burnt, mostly because you’re unaware of how dangerous the winter sun is. The solution? It’s easy! Treat winter like summer: if you know you’ll be outside for the day or you’re going on a hike-add a layer of sunscreen before you walk out the door. Most moisturiser’s have a built in SPF that will also protect you (that’s where the whole moisturising-is-vital thing comes in.)

  1. Don’t give me lip!

Our lips are often forgotten on our skincare quests, but they’re important to keep in mind-especially during winter. If your lips are feeling chapped then exfoliate them with a lip sugar or a DIY scrub (brown sugar and honey? They’ll be your best friends!) Once your lips feel smooth and soft, apply a balm to them. Remember to keep reapplying throughout the day. You can also check that your lipstick has a moisturising factor to it. There you go, now pucker up!

  1. The mask:

Not just a popular film but also a must have regardless of the season! As the seasons change you’ll adjust the mask type you use accordingly. For example in winter avoid clay masks as they will dry out your skin, rather look at exfoliation or hydration masks. Another popular winter choice is the sheet mask because it locks in all that hydration goodness!

The most important thing to remember is to be kind to your skin and to understand that a break out at the beginning of a seasonal shift is absolutely normal.
